At Beaconside Primary School, we focus on the needs of the child; we recognise that every child is unique and special. Special Educational Needs and Disabilities is a title used to describe a range of learning needs whether they be Physical, Intellectual, Social, Emotional, Cognitive or Behavioural.
Within our rich and varied curriculum, every child is given opportunities and support, in a safe, caring and stimulating environment, which should facilitate each child’s chance to reach the highest possible standards. All staff are committed to meeting the needs of all our children and strive to break down any barriers that are preventing children from making the progress they are capable of. As a school, we recognise the importance of not only supporting children’s academic progress but also developing their behavioural, emotional and social skills to enable them to become confident, independent learners.
We are proud to be an inclusive school. We try to ensure that the Special Educational Needs of children are identified early. If a child has a Special Educational Need or Disability we aim to create an environment to meet that need.
Our goal is to meet each child’s needs through quality first teaching approaches, differentiation and personalised support and interventions. We will make a reasonable adjustment to our systems to meet needs as well as offering additional provision when appropriate.
We use the Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycle to review our approaches and provision. We always work closely with parents and their child. Parents are able to meet the class teacher and/or the SENCO to discuss their child's progress, needs and barriers. We will work together to find solutions to enable each child to make the best progress they can.

Local Offer
As part of this new legislation, Local Authorities have a duty to publish a Local Offer, setting out in one place information about provision they expect to be available in their area across education, health and social care for children and young people in their area who have SEN or are disabled, including those who do not have EHC plans.
School’s also have a duty to publish their SEND Information Report as part of the Local Offer.

Special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) can affect a child or young person’s ability to learn. They can affect their:
- behaviour or ability to socialise, for example they struggle to make friends
- reading and writing, for example because they have dyslexia
- ability to understand things
- concentration levels, for example because they have ADHD
- physical ability

The 0-25 SEND Code of Practice (2015) identifies ‘four broad areas of [special educational]
need and support’ (see chapter 6 for detailed descriptions):
- Communication and interaction;
- Cognition and learning;
- Social, emotional and mental health;
- Sensory and/or physical needs.
These broad areas of needs can (and do) effect children if different ways. Each child will need differentiated intervention using the Waves of Intervention Model. (see below)
