School Travel Plan
At Beaconside, we are committed to making the journey to school safer, healthier, and more sustainable for our pupils, families, and the wider community.
As a large primary school, we understand the importance of addressing local concerns around traffic and parking. That's why we’ve developed a clear and proactive School Travel Plan to reduce congestion and promote healthier lifestyles for our children.
What We’re Doing
We are launching a range of initiatives to support active and sustainable travel:
Feet First 5-Day Challenge
We’re encouraging all families to walk, cycle or scoot to school for five consecutive days with a whole school reward if we reach our target.
Park and Stride
If you live too far to walk the full way, try parking five minutes away and walking the rest. It reduces traffic at the school gate and gives children a healthier, calmer start to the day.
Modeshift STARS Registration
We are registering with Modeshift STARS, a national initiative supporting schools to promote sustainable travel. This also helps us work towards formal accreditation for our travel plan.
Improving Safety Around School
Continue to work with the local authority, to identify ways to improve safe parking around school.
Walking Bus
We will be discussing with our Parent Link group how we could encourage a Walking Bus, where children walk to school in a supervised group with adult volunteers.
Why Active Travel?
- Reduces traffic and pollution near school
- Improves physical and mental wellbeing
- Creates safer streets for everyone
- Builds confidence and independence in children
How You Can Help
- Walk, cycle or scoot with your child when possible
- Use Park and Stride if you drive
- Volunteer for future Walking Bus routes
- Talk to your child about road safety and active travel
Together, we can make a difference—for our children, for our community, and for the planet.
